Did you party hard New Years eve?

Headaches are sometimes simple to cure!

The most common reasons for a headache are stress, tension, and hormonal fluctuations.   A few glasses of champagne, apple martinis and staying up too late can be stressful to the body!  Here are a few things you can do to help relieve that headache whether it is chronic or from the New Years Party.

Breathe – any oxygen deprivation to the brain can cause a headache.  Take 1 minute - 3 times per day to breathe deeply; inhale for 7 seconds, hold the inhale for 7 seconds, then exhale slowly to the count of 7.    Lucky 7’s girls!

Water - Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water throughout the day (example 150 lbs = drink 75 oz. of water). Your body is 70% water and dehydration can cause headaches.  There is a big controversy over whether soda, coffee, and tea account for water intake, and I can tell you that any fluids are better than none however there is really no better fluid than water.  Soda adds calories and anything with caffeine is a diuretic so you will lose more water than if you were to drink water.  I have also heard that the phosphorus in the carbonation depletes your calcium stores, which reduces the strength of your bones over time.

Elimination - make sure you are having a daily bowel movement. If not, you are storing toxins that want to get out from your body, which can result in a headache.  I recommend a tea called “Organic Smooth Move” Herbal Stimulant Laxative by Traditional Medicinals.  I buy mine at Target or Kroger.

On line you can find it on Amazon.

Magnesium - this mineral is deficient in most Americans because not enough green leafy vegetables are eaten and our soils are depleted.  500 mg - 1,000 mg of magnesium glycinate can help alleviate a headache.  I take a brand called Bluebonnet Chelated Magnesium 200mg

Omega 3 Fish Oil - this essential fatty acid is not manufactured by the body and is a must in supplement form to help balance hormones and feed the brain.  I recommend a great over-all Omega that includes a blend of Omega’s called

Udo’s 3-6-9 Oil blend.  I buy mine at the Family Health Market or you can get it from Amazon or the Vitamin Shoppe.

However, when taking magnesium for migraines don’t buy a calcium/magnesium blend. If you're taking a calcium supplement, take it at another time of day. It can interfere with the benefits of the magnesium for migraine.

Some of the things that you can eat to help avoid or alleviate headaches include dark green leafy vegetables, spices, nuts, wheat germ, whole grains, beans, soy products, milk, seafood, coffee, cocoa, tea, and bananas are all rich sources of magnesium and Omegas. (Warning: bananas are major migraine triggers for some people)

Also, remember to take try these remedies for at least 60-90 days to see if it makes a difference.

Have a great New Year Ladies and welcome to G3.
